The Power of Front Line Strategy

How can I know that classical front-line strategy from Sun Tzu's The Art of War really works?

The most dramatic proof is a matter of history. In China, Sun Tzu's strategy created the most enduring empire in human history. When his work first came West, it gave Napoleon the edge he needed to conquer Europe. Gradually, this knowledge spread through the military world and then came to the business world simply because it works. At this very moment, hundreds of thousands of people all over the world are studying Sun Tzu and The Art of War (get a quick summary of what it teaches here).

In the first stanza of his work, he says that good strategy is a matter of survival. What works, survives. His words turned out to be prophetic since his book is one of the oldest in history. If his system didn't work, would people still be studying it after 2,500 years? In a culture littered with "gurus-of-the-week," Sun Tzu's front-line strategy stands out as a monument to enduring power of ideas.

Why does Sun Tzu's system work?

The simple answer is that it gives you a much better alternative to your instinctual responses to challenging situations. When faced with challenge without training, our "flight or fight" reflex takes over. That instinct leads you to make the same mistakes again and again. The most important element in a challenging situation is your mindset. When a challenge arises, you don't want to think: "Oh my God, I'm in trouble!" but rather, "I thought this might happen and I know exactly what to do about it."

To make this mindset possible, our training in classical strategy gives you three things:

  1. A new perspective for seeing your situation
  2. A new vocabulary for analyzing your situation
  3. A better set of responses for doing what is needed

As the Roman strategist Flavius Vegetius Renatus said, “Warriors are not born; they are trained.”

What do you want? To get a pay raise? To settle a dispute? To make a sale? To be successful in your career? To start a business? To find a spouse? To become better known? To get recognized for your work? Your success in any of these areas cannot come from simply planning and working through your plans. Planning alone doesn't work because in any competition, plans collide creating situations no one plans (more about that here in one of our most popular articles.)

As you start learning classical strategy, you begin to see what you are doing right and why it works. Your hard-won knowledge from experience fits into a larger, more comprehensive system. Wouldn't it be nice to have a set of tools to help you see more opportunities and take more effective actions to embrace them? Why do I need your help to use Sun Tzu's system?

First, there is a huge different between reading Sun Tzu and understanding him.  When translated into English, Sun Tzu's powerful formulas seem like vague aphorisms (more about why in this article). It is like putting E=mc2 into an English sentence: it loses its power. Front-line strategy is like sophisticated software that doesn't come with a user-interface or on-line help. Eventually, you can figure it out. I did. Others have. The only problem is that it takes decades.

Next, almost all of Sun Tzu's methods are specific to the situation you are in.  As you read his work, you may be able to see how a few of his lessons apply directly to your immediate situation. You will not, however, remember its hundreds of lessons when you need them in the future. People only remember a 5% of what they read. While our books provide a fast entry point into Sun Tzu, simply reading a book doesn't train you.

This is not just ideas and information but a skill set of reflexes and responses. Skills require training and practice. Think of it as a martial art. Do you think you can master any martial art by simply reading a book? The only place you can get this training is through the Science of Strategy Institute.

The proof that our products work is what our thousands and thousands of customers say. Both large organizations whose people we've trained and the private individuals who read our books and take our classes have a lot to say about what we teach.

Many of these people have read and studied The Art of War on their own, but they readily admit that they only discovered its power to change their lives when they discovered our work explaining it. Most of our customers come back again and again. They might start with one book, but after they start using this system and seeing how well it works, they naturally want to know more.

The breadth of our program is a testimony to our customers' success in using this system. We offer so many books, CDs, and DVDs, our live training, and on-line training because our customers keep asking for more. They are the ones who tell us how valuable it has been in their lives. We have to thank our dedicated customers for the fact that we are the only place in the world where you can get this information

If you need more proof, you might want to look at the awards our books have earned from a variety of independent groups in a wide variety of categories. For us, however, it is not about how great our products are, but how they make our customers great.
